Guides for teachers in science education
Pollen - a European project coordinated by La main à la pâte (France) - promotes science teaching renovation in primary schools based on an inquiry-based approach. For this, a sustainable framework for science education through a child-centred approach starting in school and extending to the whole city has been created. A network of 12 interacting “seed cities” is implemented to consolidate in participating schools a quality teaching of science following inquiry principles.
Out of the twelve European countries taking part in the Pollen project, some have been experimenting with inquiry-based science education in primary school for several years now, while others have chosen to develop research on the form of education itself. The experience gained on both sides, obstacles encountered and research findings are helpful to all of the countries involved in the project.
The two following guides are intended for primary education teachers in all twelve countries:
"A methodological guide" - This is a practical guide for teachers with main inquiry approach principles, as well as many examples of situations already observed in the classroom. It aims to help set up this form of education, clearly defining what inquiry-based science education entails and offering tools derived from those created by certain countries.
"Designing and Implementing Inquiry-Based Science Units" - This document is intended for teachers and trainers of primary school. In its first part, you will find a detailed definition of inquiry-based science education (IBSE) and its important principles: ensuring that pupils have understood the question or problem, let them experience by themselves, as much as possible, etc. Some pedagogical strategies for implementing IBSE (classroom organisation) are also proposed. The second part provides guidelines for adapting or designing units of study for the class.
