Women in Science in Bulgaria (and not only)
Bulgaria goes one step forward in the number of women scientists in Europe. This is the conclusion in the "She Figures 2009", the report of the European Commission on gender equality in science, released in November in Brussels.
In Bulgaria a title is taken very slowly - there is not a woman academician or corresponding member under 35, while in Europe one in four scientists of this age, achieved the maximum recognition carries lipstick. 45% of our researchers are women, while in the EU science is still a male occupation (70%). According to this indicator only Lithuania and Latvia lead us, but Europe as a whole is far behind having one woman in two men in scientific institutes.
According to the number of doctors of science among women are sixth in the EU (53% of scientists in Bulgaria are women). Highest recognition receive women engaged in research in the private sector and those working for state institutions, while in universities still dominate men.
Women doctors and professors in our country are more than men in all fields of knowledge with the exception of construction. The report of the Commission indicates that the greatest advantage of the fair sex is in the humanities, where two of three researchers who have defended a dissertation are women. 56% of the professors in medicine and 58 percent in law and sociology are also women.
Although more than half the women are not as successful in climbing the ladder in agricultural science and in education. Only 8 of 100 research institutes or laboratories in the country are headed by women, while in Norway the ratio is 1:3.
Considering the global situation of in Europe, She Figures 2009 report makes clear that there is an imbalance in the number, seniority and influence of women and men in scientific studies and professions.
This statement is firmly grounded in the data collected by Eurostat and the Statistical Correspondents of the Helsinki Group. Although nearly all indicators show a minor growth of the number of women in scientific careers, proactive policies are needed to push forward a better equality of opportunities for female and male researchers.
She Figures is recommended reading for all policy-makers, researchers, teachers, students, and parents with a vision of a democratic, competitive and technologically advanced Europe.
