Summary: This is an eTwinning project that aims to reinforce the students’ motivation for scientific subjects, to empower their scientific and L2 (English ESP) competences and to promote their European citizenship. These objectives are implemented through Maths activities carried out in collaboration with the following “etwinned” European schools: Licèe Classique of Dieckhirch – Luxembourg and Licèe “Gaspard Monge” – Savigny sur Orge – France.
The project wants to make students understand Maths is interesting, fun and part of their life. Maths in everyday life, history of Maths, stories of men and women mathematicians, Maths and logic games and puzzles, Maths in Art and Architecture, Maths and gender are the topics dealt with. The approach is cross-curricular, so English is used to translate Maths problems and scientific texts and to communicate with the partner students. Citizenship is a constant learning practise: communication within the local group, with other European mates, respect, awareness and acceptance of diversity (gender, culture, origin, etc) are priorities. The methodology is focused on practical and hand-on activities based on cooperation, informal and peer education, playing. The target group is made up of 35 students aged 16-18 coming from different classes etwinned with groups of students from the partner schools. The team is composed of a Maths teacher and an English teacher with experiences and skills in European projects supported by the school Headmistress in cooperation with the teachers of the partner schools. The students meet once a week in extracurricular times. The teachers collaborate via mail and Skype for the planning of the activities and the exchange of materials. In the project website the students can show their works and exchange experiences.
The project results are published on http://magazinefactory.edu.fi/magazines/mathstoplay/, making use of MagazineFactory - a publishing tool which provides school groups the opportunity to work as editorial staff and to publish their own webzine.
